Doubletree Berkeley Marina

Located right on the bay with gorgeous views. This is a great area for nature walks and off-leash dog romps, but there aren't any restaurants or stores within walking distance. Short drive to plenty in West Berkeley and Emeryville though. Free parking, pool, and dogs are allowed for a fee.

Easy access to Berkeley and San Francisco. Plenty of food and stores nearby, but it's mostly shopping mall style. Emery Go Round free shuttle provides transportation around Emeryville and to BART. Parking is available for $9 per day and it has a small pool.

airbnb
Lots of budget friendly options of all sizes.

vrbo
Other budget friendly options.

Airports

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
This is the big airport in the area, but is often paralyzed by fog and other weather issues. Easy to hop on BART right from the airport. Yoga room, gourmet food, and massages available.

Oakland International Airport
This airport has less flight options, but is a gem. Feels like a small town airport where it's fast and easy to get in and out. The food options and other amenities are very limited. BART now goes directly to the airport, but you have to transfer to a monorail type train at the Coliseum station.

Getting Around Town

Cable Car

This is a very public transit friendly city with multiple options so a car isn't necessary. That said, having a car is convenient especially if you plan on going on any excursions. The wedding location isn't easily accessible via public transit, but it's an easy trip in a taxi or taxi alternative. Phone reception isn't great in the park, but people can carpool back to downtown Berkeley after the reception.

Things to Do

Top 5 things to check out in San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge/Presidio, Chinatown, Alcatraz (come along with us!), Golden Gate Park, Museums. And that's just the beginning! Here are a few suggestions for Berkeley:

Telegraph Ave Stroll
To get a real feel for the Berkeley vibe take a walk along Telegraph Avenue. Buy some tie dye or patchouli from one of the eccentric street vendors. Stop at the original Amoeba Records. Check out Moe's bookstore and grab an ice cream sandwich from Cream. People's Park is located off Telegraph on Dwight Way, which has a long history of political activism and is now a homeless haven. A mural by our next door neighbor is on the corner and tells the history of the park.

Berkeley Marina
This is a great area for nature walks and off-leash dog romps. Gorgeous views of the bay.

UC Berkeley Botanical Garden
Check out the redwood grove and the fall leaves changing color. Great view of the bay from the Water Pavillion in the Mediterranean garden.

Berkeley Farmers' Market
Saturday 10am-3pm. Along Center Street between MLK and Milvia in Downtown Berkeley. They have a mix of prepared food and produce. This is a great spot for a stroll on Saturday. You can get a feel for Berkeley food culture and do some prime people watching.

Places to Eat

The Bay Area has such amazing food this list could go on forever. But here are a few spots we like near the wedding events.

La Note
Homey French cuisine. Brunch is delicious and very popular. They don't take reservations so go early if you don't want to wait. In downtown Berkeley about 3 blocks from Hotel Shattuck.

The Cheese Board
They only offer one pizza a day. It's always vegetarian and always (in our experience) delicious. The line is usually down the block, but moves quickly. Sometimes they have live music. It's located in the stretch called the Gourmet Ghetto, which is less than a mile north of downtown Berkeley.

Gather
Small plates, sandwiches, fancy pizza, brunch. If you need a meat fix, we support getting it here. People love their burger. Ingredients are local, sustainable, and the veggie options are plentiful. In downtown Berkeley one block from Hotel Shattuck.

Jupiter
Brewery, wood fired pizza, pub food. Sit outside in the garden. In downtown Berkeley practically across the street from Hotel Shattuck.

Rangoon Super Stars
Delicious Burmese food. If you like Thai, Indian, or Chinese food give Burmese a try! A quick five minute drive from downtown Berkeley with plenty of street parking in front.

Oasis Grill
Quick, yummy middle eastern food in downtown Berkeley. We recommend the eggplant pomegranate wrap or the falafel. We know lots of meat eaters who love the shawarma. You can ask for your order spicy and they'll add their special spicy sauce.

Philz Coffee
A Bay Area coffee shop that offers customized single pour drip coffee. We recommend the iced mint mojito which includes a sprig of fresh mint. Let them know if you're a first timer and your barista will guide you.

Berkeley Bowl
Independent grocery store with two locations in South Berkeley. Largest, most diverse produce section ever. They also have plenty of snacks, prepared foods, and everyday staples. A Berkeley institution and a great place to people watch.

Traveling with Kids

We can't even begin to list all the fun things to do with kids in the Bay Area. But here are a few of our favorite things in the Berkeley/Oakland area:

Tilden Park
There are a ton of activities within the park where we're having our wedding. You can ride a miniature steam train or carousel, swim in Lake Anza, explore a botanic garden, or feed animals at the Little Farm.

Habitot Children's Museum
Located a block from Downtown Berkeley BART and around the corner from Hotel Shattuck, this is a great place for indoor fun. Kids can make art, play with water, throw leaves in a wind tunnel, climb through a vertical maze, and run their own veterinary clinic or cafe.

Children's Fairyland
This storybook theme park has been around for over 60 years. It has storybook sets to climb and explore, gentle rides, animals, and gardens.

Adventure Playground
This is an outdoor playground where kids are encouraged to build and add to the playground using tools (with adult supervision). They can also climb and play among forts, boats, and towers. Located in the Berkeley Marina near the Doubletree hotel.

Lawrence Hall of Science
UC Berkeley's public science center. Hands on exhibits that are great for kids 10 and under. Gorgeous views of the bay.
